「絵を描く日」

このたび光灯では、竹浪音羽個展「絵を描く日」を7月17日（木）から8月3日（日）に開催いたします。竹浪音羽は、イラストレーターとして書籍や雑誌の装画、挿絵を手がけるいっぽう、近年はアーティストとしても精力的に活動を続けています。

竹浪の作品の主軸となるのは、自身が撮影した景色の写真を元にした風景画です。街、自然、部屋など、日常のささやかな風景を描く竹浪の絵には、ときにそこへ架空の生き物や人物が現れることもあります。赤・青・黄の3色と、白・黒のみを用い、アクリル絵の具とパステルで描かれるこれらの作品は、まるで短編の物語の一節のように、観る者を絵画の向こう側へと誘います。

本展では、新作とともに2020年以降の制作のなかで生まれてきたドローイングや絵画の数々を展示し、作家の足跡を辿ります。

竹浪はここ数ヶ月ほど、家族の状況の変化によって、地元・静岡と現在暮らしている東京を行き来するようになりました。そのなかで、作家としての心情の移り変わりも感じたと言います。

「東京では、毎日絵を描いて暮らしているという意識があるのに、静岡に戻るとそれがふっと消える感覚がありました。同時に、幼い頃に見ていた風景と、目の前の景色が重なって、これってすごく絵みたいだなと思ったんです」と話します。

「なんてことのない景色も、誰かにとって大切なものかもしれない。絵に描くことで、それを観た人が思い出を重ねたり、観る人の数だけ見え方が違う風景が立ち上がったりすると思います。たとえ実際には、時間や風景は積み重なるものでなくても、そう信じてみたいなあという願望もあります」。

本展では、竹浪が静岡、そして東京の景色と対話するように描いた新作6点を発表します。

本展のタイトル「絵を描く日」には、絵を描く日々が少しずつ積み重なっていくことや、描かれた風景が見る人の記憶と重なり、新たな景色が生まれていく——そんなささやかな願いが込められています。ぜひ会場でご覧いただけましたら幸いです。

アーティスト・ステートメント

きのう描いた絵が一枚、机の上にある。

しばらく眺めては気になるところを直し、壁に貼って出来栄えを確認する。そうしてやっと満足できたらスマホのカメラロールをたどり、次に描きたいものを探す。ぼーっとしたまま過ぎていく日もあれば、すいすい描けて嬉しくなる日もある。そんなふうにして溜まっていく絵は、その一枚一枚が積み重なる時間のようでもあるし、ひらひらと舞い落ちる葉のようでもある。

たくさん描けばいつか、その地層から芽が出ることもあるだろうか。空っぽなわたしを満たしてくれるだろうか。

とりとめもなく夢を見つづけている今日にも、また明日がやってくる。絵を描く日が降り積もっていく。

“A Day to Paint”

Kohtoh Gallery is pleased to present Otoha Takenami Solo Exhibition: A Day to Paint, on view from Thursday, July 17 to Sunday, August 3, 2025.

Otoha Takenami has worked extensively as an illustrator, producing book covers and editorial illustrations. In recent years, she has also been active as a visual artist. Her paintings are based on photographs she takes of everyday scenery—urban landscapes, nature, or domestic interiors. Often, these seemingly familiar settings are quietly interrupted by the presence of imaginary creatures or figures. Using only the primary colors red, blue, and yellow, along with black and white, Takenami paints with acrylic and pastel. Her works unfold like fragments of short stories, inviting the viewer beyond the surface of the canvas.

This exhibition presents new paintings alongside a selection of drawings and works created since 2020, tracing the evolution of her artistic journey.

In recent months, Takenami has been traveling between her current home in Tokyo and her hometown of Shizuoka to support changes in her family situation. This shift in environment has influenced her mindset as an artist.

“In Tokyo, I’m very aware that I’m living a life where I paint every day. But when I return to Shizuoka, that awareness fades away. At the same time, the landscapes I saw as a child begin to overlap with what I see now—it felt strangely painterly,” she says.“Even the most ordinary scenes might be precious to someone. By painting them, viewers may layer their own memories onto them. I believe there are as many ways of seeing a landscape as there are people. Even if time and scenery don’t literally accumulate, I want to believe that they can.”

This exhibition features six new works in which Takenami explores and converses with the landscapes of both Tokyo and Shizuoka.

The exhibition title, A Day to Paint, embodies her quiet wish: that the act of painting continues day by day, the images she paints accumulate like layers of time, and the painted landscapes resonate with the memories of those who view them.We warmly invite you to experience these works at the gallery.
