The overwhelming I　圧倒的な私

このたび光灯では、写真家・セルフパブリッシャーとして活動する江崎愛の個展「The overwhelming I　圧倒的な私」を開催いたします。

江崎は、東京造形大学で映像を学んだのち、独学で写真を始めました。友人が撮影したポートレイトのフィルムを見たことをきっかけに、「写真には撮る人の心情が写る」という直感を得たといいます。それ以来、江崎の写真は常に「他者と自分」の関係をめぐる問いとともにあります。

2022年の個展「Portraits in November」では、被写体との関係性そのものを主題とし、23年の「The worst day」では「最悪な１日」の自分を記録するように撮影しました。いずれのシリーズにも通底するのは、「自分」という存在から世界を思考しようとする姿勢です。

本展のタイトル「The overwhelming I　圧倒的な私」は、どんなに他の人の事を作品にしようとしても圧倒的な自分の存在があり、それに基づいて作品を作っているという江崎の心情が現れています。江崎にとって「写真を撮ること」は、他者と関係するためであると同時に、自らを見つめ返す行為でもあるのです。

本展では、新作および過去に他者を写した写真を通じて、「自分」の存在の複雑さを顕にし、江崎の世界へのまなざしが、一層明確に立ち上がります。また、5月に出版した写真集も販売します。

アーティスト・ステートメント

私が撮った他人のポートレイトを見た人に、「これはあなたですよね？」と言われた事が何度もあります。

初めて会った人から、もしくは数年来の友人からも、他人の写真を私かと聞かれました。

面白いことに、実際はその被写体たちと私は、全然似ていないのです。

「あまり親しくない関係性の人」の方が自分を投影しやすいので、数時間だけ相手と向き合い、会話をし、その人の輪郭が何となくつかめたらカメラを持ち撮影を始める、というプロジェクトを数年続けています。

被写体を物として扱っているようで、なんて身勝手なのだろうと思うのと同時に、「それが写真だ」とも思います。

写真の持つ粗野な魅力と、被写体との共犯関係性がなければ壊れてしまう部分が共存するので、大切に扱います。

“The overwhelming I”

Kohtoh Gallery is pleased to present The overwhelming I, a solo exhibition by photographer and self-publisher Ai Ezaki.

After studying film at Tokyo Zokei University, Ezaki began teaching herself photography. She recalls that her interest in portraiture began when she saw a friend’s developed film and noticed that one portrait—of the person her friend had feelings for—was strikingly compelling. From that moment, she realized that “a photograph reflects the emotions of the person who takes it.”

Since then, Ezaki’s practice has always revolved around the relationship between self and others. In her 2022 solo exhibition Portraits in November, she explored the very nature of her relationships with her subjects. In The worst day (2023), she photographed herself on her “worst day,” as if documenting a moment of personal collapse. Across these projects runs a consistent inquiry: an attempt to think about the world through the lens of her own existence.

The title The overwhelming I expresses Ezaki’s realization that no matter how much she tries to make work about others, her own overwhelming presence inevitably forms the foundation of her practice. For Ezaki, photographing others is simultaneously an act of connecting with them and a means of reflecting upon herself.

This exhibition presents new and earlier portraits of others, revealing the complex structure of the “self” as it surfaces through her gaze. Ezaki’s vision of the world emerges here with renewed clarity. A newly published photobook will also be available for purchase.

Artists’ Statements

There have been many times when people looked at a portrait I took of someone else and asked,“Is this a picture of you?”

Whether it was a stranger I had just met or a long-time friend, they would mistake another person’s portrait for me.Interestingly, these subjects often bear no resemblance to me at all.

I find that it’s actually easier to project myself onto people with whom I’m not particularly close. For several years, I’ve continued a project in which I spend a few hours with someone—talking, getting a sense of their outline—and then begin photographing them.

It may seem selfish to treat my subjects as objects, yet at the same time I think, “That’s what photography is.”Photography’s rough, raw allure coexists with the fragile, conspiratorial relationship between photographer and subject—and that fragile tension is precisely what I cherish.
