“METAMORPHOSES”

このたび光灯では、展覧会「METAMORPHOSES（メタモルポセス）」を開催いたします。本展では、アクセサリーブランドKÄSIと、画家・榎本マリコの作品を発表します。

デザイナーの渥美香奈子が手掛けるKÄSIは、17年ほど前に渥美がひとりで始めたアクセサリーブランドです。白樺、カツラ、オークなど、さまざまな木を素材に一つひとつ丁寧に仕上げられた猫のバレッタや馬のネックレス、天然石や磁器など自然の素材を使ったリングやイヤリングなど、身につけた人はもちろん、それを目にした人にも小さな幸福を灯します。

フィンランド語で「手」という意味を持つKÄSIのアクセサリーは、あたたかみのなかにも、凛とした清らかさが漂う作風が特徴です。

榎本マリコはこれまで、国内外での発表のほか、多くの挿絵や装画を手掛けてきました。榎本が描く肖像画は、植物や鏡によって顔が覆われたり、ときに後ろを向いていたりと、心情がもっとも現れるはずの表情が見えず、榎本のどこか達観した眼差しを宿しています。私たち鑑賞者がそこから何かを読み取ろうとすればするほど、その存在はするりとすり抜けて、どこかへ去ってしまうような儚さを纏い、物語を感じさせる幻想的な絵画世界が特徴です。

今回初めて一緒に展示する二人は、いずれも独学でやアクセサリーづくりや絵画制作を始め、無二の発想力で独自の表現を切り開いてました。

本展のタイトル「METAMORPHOSES」は、古代ローマの詩人・オウィディウスの神話集『変身物語』に由来します。同作では、神々の気まぐれによって人間が動物や木や宝石へと姿を変えていきますが、二人の作品もまた、内なる姿を変えていく力に満ちています。

榎本が本展で発表するのは、どこか遠い憧れのものへと変身したいと願う気持ちを、動物をモチーフに描き出すシリーズ「ANINORMAL」です。渥美は、身につけた瞬間にそれをまとう人の気分をほどき、心地よい変化をもたらしてくれるアクセサリーを展示販売します。

「変わりたい」という切実さと、「身につけることで変わる」ときの高揚感。そして、人が何かに憧れ、少しだけ姿を変えながら生きていくこと。本展を通して、その静かな変化の美しさに触れていただければ幸いです。

KÄSI

渥美香奈子が手掛けるアクセサリーブランド。KÄSIは、フィンランド語で「手」を意味する。「とにかくつくっていたい」という純粋な衝動から、独学でアクセサリー作りをスタート。糸のこぎりと彫刻刀を使い、ほぼ機械を使わない手仕事にこだわっている。白樺や楓、桂などの天然木をベースに、天然石や貝、パール、磁器など、自然の調和を感じさせる異素材を組み合わせた作風が特徴。木材が持つ一つひとつ異なる香りや温もりを活かし、身に着ける人とそれを見る人の五感に優しく響く、お守りのような作品を届けている。

榎本マリコ

1982年埼玉県生まれ、東京都在住。ファッションを学んだのち、独学で絵を描き始める。

『82年生まれ、キム・ジヨン』（チョ・ナムジュ 著）、読売新聞連載小説『黄色い家』(川上未映子著)等の文芸書籍の装画や演劇、映画のビジュアル制作を手掛ける。顔のないポートレート作品を中心に、近年では神話や物語、詩、娘を起点にした油彩シリーズを制作発表し。作品集に『空と花とメランコリー』（芸術新聞社）がある。

“METAMORPHOSES”

Kohtoh is pleased to present METAMORPHOSES, a two-person exhibition featuring the accessory brand KÄSI and painter Mariko Enomoto.

Founded approximately seventeen years ago by designer Kanako Atsumi, KÄSI is an independent jewelry brand born from a deeply personal practice. Handcrafted from materials such as birch, katsura, and oak, its cat-shaped barrettes, horse necklaces, and rings and earrings incorporating natural stones and porcelain bring quiet moments of delight not only to those who wear them, but also to those who encounter them.

Named after the Finnish word for "hand," KÄSI is distinguished by a warmth that is accompanied by a quiet sense of clarity and grace.

Mariko Enomoto has exhibited her paintings both in Japan and internationally, while also producing numerous book covers and editorial illustrations. Her portraits often conceal the face behind plants or mirrors, or depict figures turned away from the viewer. The facial expression—where emotion would normally be revealed—is absent, yet her paintings carry a calm, contemplative gaze. The more viewers attempt to grasp the identity of her subjects, the more elusive they become, leaving behind a fragile presence and a dreamlike world rich with narrative.

Although this marks the first exhibition bringing their works together, both artists began their creative practices independently—Atsumi in jewelry-making and Enomoto in painting—and have each forged a distinctive visual language through remarkable originality.

The exhibition title, METAMORPHOSES, takes its name from the mythological epic by the Roman poet Ovid, in which humans are transformed into animals, trees, and precious stones through the whims of the gods. Likewise, the works of both artists are imbued with an inner force of transformation.

Enomoto presents ANINORMAL, a new series portraying animals driven by the longing to become something they admire from afar. Atsumi, meanwhile, exhibits and offers for sale accessories that gently shift the wearer's state of mind, inviting subtle but meaningful transformation the moment they are worn.

The earnest desire to become someone—or something—else. The exhilaration that comes with transformation through adornment. And the quiet way we continue changing as we move through life, guided by our admiration for what lies beyond ourselves.

Through this exhibition, we hope visitors will experience the quiet beauty of transformation.

○ Biography

KÄSI

KÄSI is an accessory brand created by designer Kanako Atsumi. Its name means "hand" in Finnish.

Driven by the simple desire "to keep making things," Atsumi taught herself jewelry making and continues to work almost entirely by hand using a fretsaw and carving tools, avoiding machinery whenever possible.

Working primarily with natural woods such as birch, maple, and katsura, she combines them with materials including natural stones, shells, pearls, and porcelain. Each piece celebrates the individuality of the wood itself—its unique grain, scent, and warmth—creating talisman-like objects that gently resonate with both the wearer and the viewer.

Mariko Enomoto

Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1982, Mariko Enomoto lives and works in Tokyo.

After studying fashion, she began painting independently. Alongside her artistic practice, she has produced book covers and visual works for literature, theatre, and film, including the Japanese editions of Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-joo and The Yellow House by Mieko Kawakami.

Known for her faceless portraits, Enomoto's recent oil paintings draw inspiration from mythology, stories, poetry, and her daughter. Her monograph, Sky, Flowers and Melancholy, was published by Geijutsu Shinbunsha.
