“夏季を想う花器”

光灯ではこのたび、ガラス作家・池上創の個展「夏季を想う花器」を開催いたします。

2000年生まれの池上は、多摩美術大学工芸学科と富山ガラス造形研究所で専門的にガラス工芸を学んだ後、現在は東京を拠点に活動を続け、国内外で発表を重ねてきました。

池上の制作では、ホットワークとコールドワークという二つの技法が重要な役割を果たします。

複数人のチームで行われ、池上が「オーケストラの衝突と調和のよう」だと喩えるホットワークでは、1200℃の高温で溶けたガラスを手元で練ったり、高いところから垂らしたりしながら造形が繰り返されます。まるで３次元空間へのドローイングのように形を描き出していくその過程では、作家の身体性が直接ガラスという素材に反映され、アクションペインティングのごとく、衝動的かつ瞬間的に形が立ち上がります。

一方、コールドワークでは、長い時間をかけて一人でガラスを研磨します。

長年向き合ってきたガラスという素材が「形をつくるためだけではなく、変化し続ける生命の姿を映し出し、人と自然とのつながりを探るための媒体」だという池上にとって、この2つのこの工程は、形をあらためて見つめ直し、作品と対話を重ねる重要な時間です。

即興的で不可逆的なガラスならではの表現には、造形された最中の時間をはじめ、自然物から作られた素材そのものが内包する時間、あるいは熱や重力、空気といった、私たちの周囲に存在する目に見えないエネルギーが、多層的に刻まれています。池上は、衝動と熟考を繰り返しながら、ガラスという素材を通してそこに内在される「生命とは何か」という問いを探求しているのです。

本展では、新作の花器をメインに発表します。

池上は器について「私にとって器とは、機能性を持ったキャンバスである。作り手の軌跡を内包しながら、光や周囲の風景を映し、見る者の存在をも取り込み続ける。器は、物を入れるための形であると同時に、時間や身体、そして空間をとどめる場でもある」と語ります。

本展の花器は、池上独自の技法である、溶けたガラスの塊を一つひとつ伸ばし、陶芸の手捻りのように造形する技術によって制作されました。手の動きや素材そのものの表情を生かしながら、梅雨明けや夏至、紫陽花、花火など、夏のさまざまな風景や季節の移ろいをイメージしています。

鉱物や宝石を思わせるガラスは、光を受けるたびに表情を変え、鮮やかな色彩と涼やかな輝きを見せます。それぞれの夏の記憶や風景を思い浮かべながら、作品をお楽しみいただければ幸いです。

アーティスト・プロフィール

池上創　So Ikegami

ガラス作家。2000年神奈川県横浜市生まれ。22年、多摩美術大学美術学部工芸学科ガラスプログラム卒業。24年、富山ガラス造形研究所研究科卒業。多摩美術大学工芸学科ガラス研究室副手を経て、現在多摩美術大学工芸学科ガラス研究室助手として勤務。

“Vessels for Summer”

Kohtoh is pleased to present So Ikegami: Vessels for Summer, a solo exhibition by glass artist So Ikegami.

Born in 2000, Ikegami studied glass craft at Tama Art University and the Toyama Institute of Glass Art. He is currently based in Tokyo and has presented his work in Japan and internationally.

Two techniques play an important role in Ikegami’s practice: hot working and cold working.

Hot working, which Ikegami likens to “the collision and harmony of an orchestra,” is carried out by a team. Molten glass heated to 1,200°C is repeatedly shaped by kneading it by hand and drawing it down from above. Like drawing in three-dimensional space, the process traces forms through the air. The artist’s physicality is directly reflected in the glass, and forms emerge impulsively and instantaneously, much like action painting.

In cold working, Ikegami polishes the glass alone over an extended period of time. For an artist who sees glass not simply as a material for creating form, but as “a medium for reflecting the ever-changing forms of life and exploring the connection between people and nature,” these two processes are important periods in which he reexamines the forms that have emerged and continues his dialogue with the work.

The spontaneous and irreversible expression made possible by glass contains, in layers, the time of its making, the time embedded in the natural material itself, and invisible energies that surround us, such as heat, gravity, and air. Moving repeatedly between impulse and contemplation, Ikegami explores the question of “what is life?” through the materiality of glass.

The exhibition focuses on a new series of vessels.

Ikegami describes vessels as follows:

“For me, a vessel is a canvas with a function. It contains the traces of its maker while reflecting light and the surrounding landscape, continually incorporating the presence of the viewer. A vessel is a form for holding something, but at the same time, it is also a place that holds time, the body, and space.”

The vessels in this exhibition were created using Ikegami’s unique technique of stretching masses of molten glass one by one and shaping them in a manner similar to hand-built ceramics. Drawing on the movement of the hand and the inherent expression of the material, the works evoke various summer landscapes and the changing seasons, including the end of the rainy season, the summer solstice, hydrangeas, and fireworks.

The glass, reminiscent of minerals and gemstones, changes its expression each time it catches the light, revealing vivid colors and a cool, luminous brilliance. We hope you will enjoy the works while recalling your own memories and landscapes of summer.

So Ikegami

Glass artist. Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa, in 2000. Graduated from the Glass Program, Department of Crafts, Faculty of Art, Tama Art University, in 2022. Completed the Graduate Program at the Toyama Institute of Glass Art in 2024. After working as an assistant in the Glass Laboratory at Tama Art University, he currently works as a research associate in the same department.
