“The Beautiful Remains”

このたび光灯では、酒井建治の個展「The Beautiful Remains」を開催します。酒井は1996年京都府生まれ。東京での活動を経て、現在はロンドンを拠点とするアーティストです。

酒井の制作の根源にあるのは、個人と社会との間に生じる関係性の変化への眼差しです。ひとつの存在や出来事によって、それまで保たれていた秩序が揺らぎ、その変化が新たな日常となっていくこと――酒井はそうした不可逆的な循環のなかに潜む美意識を、絵画や版画、立体など多様な表現を通して探求してきました。

本展では、ロンドン滞在中より制作を始めたシリーズ「The Beautiful Remains」を発表します。本シリーズは「遺骨」をモチーフに、個人のイメージが他者によって再解釈され、変質していく過程が扱われています。遺骨は、一度変化すると元に戻れない状態の象徴であると同時に、社会のなかで静かに蓄積されていく個人の感情や記憶のメタファーです。

「私たちが日々経験する出来事や感情は、他者の言葉や社会構造を通して濾過され、知らず知らずのうちに輪郭を変えていく」。酒井はそのような現象を「湖の底に沈殿するもの」に喩えます。穏やかな水面の下に、声にならない不安や空虚が静かに積み重なっている。都市や社会が揺さぶられた瞬間、それまで人知れず沈んでいたものが形を変えて浮かび上がる――本展では、そうした構造の気配を空間全体を通して立ち上げます。

2024年の個展「Like Seeing This World for the First Time」（東京、山梨）では、環境や関係性の変化によって生じる知覚の変遷や、新しい風景との遭遇がテーマとなっていました。本展はその延長線上にありながら、より内面的で不可視な領域へと踏み込み、変化の痕跡や沈殿した感情そのものへと視線を向けています。

ロンドンでの生活や海外での展示経験を背景に最新作を発表する本展では、酒井が近年探求してきた「変質していく個人の輪郭」が、より濃密なかたちで展開されます。

私たちが日々を賢く生き延びるために切り捨て、底に沈めてきたもの。

それらは沈殿し、やがて別の役割を持ったまま浮かび上がる。

都市の中で呼吸を合わせ直しながら、私はその重力を観察している。

酒井建治　Kenji Sakai

1996年京都生まれ。東京での活動を経て、現在はロンドンを拠点に制作を行っている。構造化や個人の関係性の変化に関心がある。ひとつの出来事や存在が現れることで、それまで保たれていた秩序や距離感が崩れ、その変化がやがて日常として静かに根づいていく循環のなかに、美を見出している。そうした感覚を、絵画や版画、立体など多様な表現を通して探っている。

近年参加した主なグループ展に、2025年「bridge」（biscuit gallery × NISO、東京）、「TO SEE A WORLD IN A GRAIN OF SAND」（Qloud Collective 、ロンドン）、「AUTO AMOR」（AUTO AMOR、ロンドン）、「Out Of The Diary」（SAI、東京）、「Annual Open 2025」（Southwark Park Gallery、ロンドン）など。キュレーション展に「SAFE HOUSE」（safe house 2、ロンドン）など。2022年よりアーティストラン・プラットフォーム「MATTER」ディレクターを務める。

“The Beautiful Remains”

Kenji Sakai’s solo exhibition The Beautiful Remains will be held at Kohtoh from May 28 (Thu) through June 14 (Sun), 2026. Born in Kyoto in 1996, Sakai is currently based in London after previously working in Tokyo.

At the core of Sakai’s practice is an interest in the shifting relationships between individuals and society. The appearance of a single presence or event can destabilize an existing order, and that transformation gradually settles into everyday life as a new normal. Through painting, printmaking, and sculptural works, Sakai has explored the awareness embedded within such irreversible cycles of change.

This exhibition presents The Beautiful Remains, a series initiated during the artist’s time in London. Centered around the motif of “human remains,” the series examines how personal images are reinterpreted and transformed through the gaze and language of others. Human remains, as symbols of a state that cannot return to its original form once altered, also function as metaphors for emotions and memories that quietly accumulate within society.

The events and emotions we experience in daily life are filtered through language and social structures, gradually changing shape without our noticing. Sakai compares this phenomenon to sediment collecting at the bottom of a lake. Beneath a calm surface, unspoken anxieties and emptiness quietly accumulate. When cities or societies are shaken, those unseen sediments emerge in altered forms. Through the exhibition space, Sakai attempts to evoke the presence of these underlying structures.

In his 2024 solo exhibition Like Seeing This World for the First Time (Tokyo / Yamanashi), Sakai explored perceptual shifts brought about by changing environments and relationships, as well as encounters with unfamiliar landscapes. While continuing from that trajectory, the present exhibition moves further into invisible and interior territories, turning its attention toward traces of transformation and emotions that have settled beneath the surface.

Against the backdrop of life in London and experiences exhibiting internationally, Sakai further develops his recent exploration of “the transforming contours of the self” in a more concentrated and immersive form.

Biography

Kenji Sakai

Born in Kyoto in 1996, Kenji Sakai is currently based in London after working in Tokyo. His practice focuses on structures and the changing dynamics of personal relationships. He finds beauty in the cycles through which the emergence of a single event or presence disrupts existing orders and distances, before gradually settling into everyday life as a new normal. Sakai explores these sensations through diverse media including painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

Recent group exhibitions include bridge (biscuit gallery × NISO, Tokyo, 2025), TO SEE A WORLD IN A GRAIN OF SAND (Qloud Collective, London, 2025), AUTO AMOR (AUTO AMOR, London, 2025), Out Of The Diary (SAI, Tokyo, 2025), and Annual Open 2025 (Southwark Park Gallery, London, 2025). Curated exhibitions include SAFE HOUSE (safe house 2, London). Since 2022, he has served as director of the artist-run platform MATTER.
